To help farmers win the fight against animal diseases . CowTribe was founded in 2015 as result of a simple observation: animal diseases wreck havoc on farmers in Africa. They can spread quickly from one farm to another wiping out millions of heads and looking at the magnitude of most outbreaks and their impact on the farmers who depend on livestock for survival, this type of inertia is not only regrettable but crippling. Real time surveillance and prompt actions are paramount in diminishing the impact of epizootics on livestock. For this reason, early detection and shortening the time between detection, reporting and providing measures to contain an outbreak is crucial. CowTribe tackles these issues by offering tools and services, which substantially improve animal health communication among smallholder farmers in Africa.
The first report came as village we visited . A subscriber’s cow was sick; it looked like Foot and Mouth Disease and needed immediate attention. Our team quickly reached out to the veterinary office and a vet was sent his way. Soon, subscription increased from 50 farmers in 2 communities to over 3,500 farmers in just 8 months. While this presented significant milestone for the organization, it also presented a new set of challenge that needed quick solution.
A major challenge we faced was how to quickly process vast quantities of information in an emergency situation. For instance, with over 3,000 users on the platform and more than 120 reports are generated on daily basis. Manually processing these messages to look for the most important ones became the next big challenge for team.
